Product details

Duraco underground septic tank manufactured in Mauritius. Designed for below-ground installation for treatment of household wastewater. The tank operates in three zones: an upper aerobic zone breaking down fats, oil and grease; a middle aerobic zone where organic matter is degraded to carbon dioxide and water; and a lower anaerobic zone where sludge is broken down by anaerobic bacteria. Treated water passes through a pre-filter basket into the absorption pit.

Sizing Guide:

Average wastewater generation per person is 180 litres per day. Retention time for treatment is 48 hours. Volume required = number of persons x 180L x 2. Example: a family of 5 requires a 1,800L septic tank (5 x 180L x 2).

Installation Process:

Step 1 — Excavation: Dig to a depth providing maximum 300mm of fine soil over the top of the tank. Allow 230mm clearance around the tank.

Step 2 — Bedding: Allow minimum 150mm of compacted rock sand bedding. Level the surface before placing the tank. No concrete base required. The tank is supplied with PVC sleeves (110mm internal diameter) at inlet and outlet — glue pipes to sleeves using standard PVC glue.

Step 3 — Backfilling: Fill the tank with water through the inlet as you backfill, keeping the water level even with the backfill level. Backfill in 200mm layers, compacting each layer. Maximum backfill over the top is 300mm. If more than 300mm of soil is required above the top, protect with a heavy-duty concrete slab resting on firm ground around the tank — not on the tank itself.

Step 4 — Septic Extension: If the manhole lid does not reach ground level, install a Duraco septic extension before backfilling.

Step 5 — Leaching Field: Home sewer drain must slope at least 1/4 inch per foot downhill to the septic inlet. Outlet pipe must slope 1/8 inch per foot to the absorption pit. Absorption pit must be within 3m of the septic tank and of similar volume.

Maintenance:

Have the septic tank pumped every 3 to 5 years. If the tank has not been used for a long period, flush toilets several times to reactivate the aerobic process.

Important:

Do not install in water-saturated clay or high water table conditions. Tanks are not fire-resistant — keep away from open flame or heat above 80°C. Do not install under vehicle paths without a heavy-duty concrete slab. When pumped for maintenance, refill immediately. Designed for underground use only. Avoid abusive use of detergent.

Warranty: 3 years. Failure to comply with installation instructions voids the warranty.
